Centre d’art contemporain APAC, Nevers, France. 1990

A book about a line by Mallarmé and a line by André Chénier.
Simon Cutts’ ‘a line of thin pale blue’ reinterprets Mallarmé’s belief that
the repetition of the horizon line, for instance the blue of the sea, in impressionists’ works defined order.
‘a line of thin pale red’ by Ian Hamilton Finlay is symmetrical to Simon Cutts’ ‘a line of thin pale blue’. André Chénier was guillotined in 1794. After the reign of Terror family and friends wore a thin ribbon of red around their necks to symbolise where the blade would fall. 15 x 10.5 cm.
