Milan Milojevic

An Affair in the Balkans, 1991–1992

In 1991 Milan Milojevic was enjoying his residency at Peacock Artspace in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The residency coincided with the crisis the federation of Yugoslavia found itself in a decade after the death of its autocratic leader Tito.
Milojevic was interested in following news of events in the country his father left in the 1940s to migrate to Australia.
During his residency and later back in Australia he produced a group of prints depicting the bickering between groups, which would lead to the break up of Yugoslavia.

Presented here is a selection of the prints from An Affair in the Balkans. It begins with the 1991 etching ‘Trouble at the Waterhole’, which reflects the beginnings of bickering between the two most powerful rivals of the former republic. These rivals are depicted as ‘dogs of war’ in the screenprint ‘An Affair in the Balkans II’
